The Knife of Never Letting Go

Reviewed by Mewspaper

The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness. If you enjoy suspenseful, sci-fi thrillers/fantasy novels, this is one book you don’t want to miss.

The story is told through the eyes, and, most importantly, thoughts, of twelve-year-old Todd Hewitt, the last “boy” left in Prentisstown. In New World, a year is thirteen months, animals can talk, all the women are dead, and there is never true silence. Men and animals are plagued with a germ called Noise that allows thoughts to be heard, and almost nothing can be kept private. Todd is one month away from the birthday that will make him a man when he and his dog, Manchee, discover a patch of silence in the Noise. Realizing that he can’t tell anyone about this, Todd escapes Prentisstown, heading towards an imagined safety, with a hysterical preacher and an army behind him. As he runs, his entire view on the world changes dramatically, and he must separate the horrors of reality from the lies. Todd is faced with tough decisions, learning what it takes to become a man in a horribly twisted society.

The book is brilliantly written, with what may be one of the best opening pages of all time. Patrick Ness writes the book with a unique style, often cutting off sentences, repeating words, and making good use of parenthesis, so it feels like you are actually in Todd Hewitt’s thoughts. Incorrect grammar and spelling is used, probably to suggest the deterioration of language.

The Knife of Never Letting Go is dark and thought-provoking, full of emotion, tragedy, violence, and constant suspense. The cliffhanger ending will feel like a slap in your face, leaving you wanting more. Fortunately for readers, the next book in the trilogy, The Ask and the Answer, has just come out recently, and it is, in my opinion, even better than the first. I highly recommend The Knife of Never Letting Go, for both teens and adults.

Dear Polly*,
You asked me what do to if you think someone hates you but you don’t want to ask them if they do. Well first of all you have to try and figure out why they might hate you. But don’t jump to conclusions. They might not hate you after all. This could all be in your head. Ask around with your friends that might know him too and see if they know anything. Or do some snooping and ask your friends to ask him if he doesn’t like you. Hate is a strong word so he might just not like you at the moment. As I said don’t jump to conclusions, you might find that he still likes you and all is well. A very good idea though is to ask him yourself. Just get him preferably alone, then just ask away. This will make him more comfortable since you are alone and he won’t have to put a guard up if you are friends. If he ends up hating you then ask why. All you can do is try to fix it, or if you prefer, move on.

Buzz o’ Tron
Toy Story 3
Release date: TBA in 2010
Toy Story 3 is the third film in the series. So far from what Disney has stated, the film will take place about a decade after the original two films, and will have Andy (the original two films protagonist) going off to college and donating off the toys. After they awake they discover that they are not at Andy’s home. The rag-tag team of toys then set off an adventure to discover where Andy has gone. Apparently at the same time they are using a new type of animation for this film. (Unconfirmed information) Another piece of information that maybe unconfirmed is that the film will be in 3D.

The following are actual statements from students regarding the film and its plot.
Philip Paverd: “They should have stopped at two, three might be too much”
Darian Sorouri: “They are killing the genius that has been created with the original two”
Nelson Hernandez: “I hope that it can live up to its expectations”
Reilly Megee: “I think it will be good all the toy stories have been good I hope this one
will also”
Myself: "Looking foward to it personaly can't wait for the film"

So I’m guessing that in the end this film will have high expectations, unfortunantly some think it will blow. Expect this trilogy
to hit the big screen in 2010.
